Late Start

Period 1 Grade 9 Film Arts - room 203 ( next to 202 ) - above main office - no number on the door.

Students are supposed to show rough cut or raw footage of their "Moment of Truth" videos today. Please have Wally or Kirk open the laptop cart -  please have students share the files with each other today. There will be no videotaping or production work.

Students can have 15 minutes to prep, and then have them share their footage on the laptops as the rest of the class watches. Then open the floor for feedback. The students are very familiar with the critique format. This is the link to the production groups.

Period 2 - same classroom

Have students continue to work on their video pre-production. Students can work in the editing suites if the doors are wide open. Students have storyboard, scripts, shot lists and a poster to create and prep for their films.


If students do not have enough to do in either class. They can view this set of films online. (ask Wally or Kirk to set this up.)

Tuesday November 25

Period 1-
 students worked on editing - shooting and creating posters for their "Moment of Truth" movies.
Students will be showing their raw - rough cut footage to the teacher tomorrow.

Period 3 - Grade 11/12 animation
Micheal and Arad did not  have their work with them
Students are working on their flipbooks - some students will need more pages - ask Kirk where they can purchase more. About half the students showed their process work - the rest must show the work on Friday.

I introduced scriptwriting format and storyboard format formally

Students then had time to respond to pitch feedback

They are now working on scripts, storyboards and when rough shooting with iPads.

Period 1
Students will continue to work on Hammersmith or Day in the Life assignment. Due Tuesday October 28.

Period 3 Students continued to work on the walk cycle assignment. All handouts and paper are in a plastic folder. Both grades have to hand in their walk drawings of legal paper on Tuesday Oct 28!

Period 5 - Students were assigned their exposure how to videos. All must be shot in classroom or room 204 and finished video is due Tuesday Oct 28.

Tuesday October 21

Period 1 - half the class was gone a Geography Trip
Students in class worked on Hammersmith or Day in the Life video which is now due at the end of the day on MONDAY!!

Oliver, Mustafa, Lawson, Zack learned how to make storycards on Clip and Filipe shot with a iphone rhode mic.

Period 3
Students will work on their character sheets - they said they needed one more day.

Period 4  - not much done today - introduced next assignment briefly before internet went down.

Period 1 - students had last day working on the clips assignment - all submission should be on my hard drive, on pogo, or the student has talked to me. Tomorrow we will have a screening and  appreciation crit. I will then be talking about our next assignment - which is for Adobe.

Period 2 - half the students have handed in their card assignment - the other half got bogged down when I was away. So they worked with me to finish up editing - it must be done by Friday. The other students got a critical review sheet and we viewed and talked about: Beasts of the
Southern Wild, Dissolution, and Tween. Next class I will be continuing supporting the editing students - while also introducing the next assignment to those who are finished. I will be putting those students into groups and we will be exploring the perimeters of the upcoming video assignment.

I will be walking them through a rush - film production exercise that  takes them through the process. I will then have them working with the editing clips from grade 9 later.

Tuesday October 14

Period 1 - Students continued to work on edit assignment. Karla will be late as she missed classes last week. Felisha will be meeting with me for extra help on Thursday after school. Alfonso got his footage started. The rest of the class must have their editing done by the end of class on Wednesday. That includes reflection sheet. We will share the films with a popcorn event on Thursday.

Period 3 - students have until the end of the week to get their stop motion animations done. I introduced the beginning of the classical animation unit by showing some examples of character animation and showing some how to draw tutorials. Have fuller expectations on next unit for Friday.

Period 4 - students continued to work on the final pieces of the card assignment. Next class the new film assignment will be shared. Sariena suggested that we use the idea of "perspective" as a theme for the video and that an incident or story should be told by different characters. We talked previously of having the film be in black and white.

Period 1 Grade 9 Film Arts
Today was the first fill day of editing the clips in the groups. Two of the groups are using iMovie because of file format issues. Note to self - have students set file format and mode before shooting in future! Things went pretty well. Tomorrow, more of the same.

Period 3 Grade 11/12 Animation
Students continued to work on stop-frame animation which will be due on Friday. One group is finished, another almost. Next day Finished groups can work on the bonus piece, which is making a stop frame with 3D objects and if they are finished that, they should work on an illustrated cover page for their final report. They should also each fill out a reflection sheet, and must submit a storyboard and any working notes in a final report.

Period 4 Grade 10 Film Arts
Half the students shared their stereotype films and we did a class reflection and critique with them. Work in general was strong in composition and presented good thought and insight went into the presentation of the stereotype.

Monday October 6

Period 1 Grade 9 Film Arts

Each group will try to find 3 different films to be made from the clips.
Each group member must do some of the editing - if 3 stories, each member makes one film.

Period 1

Students were pretty much in production - there were two groups with missing members so one shot none person footage and the other reviewed existing footage - Daniel's group helped other groups today.

Period 2

Some students rewrote the composition quiz, and I went over footage submitted by those who did not write it. Showed the beginnings of cutting and montage videos from Filmmaker IQ. Next class colour temp worksheet and shot is due. We will begin editing technique assignment with the clips submitted in the card assignment.

Period 1 - looked at, advised and approved all virtual storyboards for the clips assignment. This weekend Armen and Katya's group have cameras for the weekend. I reminded students that Drama majors have to agree and be used at their convenience outside of class time and that Mrs. Y has to be booked for supervision outside of class time.

Students will be in full production on shots assignment as of Monday and I hope to have all footage shot by the end of the day Wednesday. Thursday they will be watching videos on shot sequencing and watching a video to analyse shot by shot - this assignment must be done(the analysis) by Monday Oct 6.

Period 3
Students are in their group animated production. Their short films are due to me in pogoplug or on usb today.

Period 1
Students worked on their "virtual storyboard" using still photos or video clips. They also have their "cards"done and will have to show me their storyboard before starting on the good clips. They can start production as early as Friday but all should be shooting the good video by Monday.

Period 3
Students must have individual video in by Friday at the end of the day - in pogoplug or give it to me on usb to put into pogoplug for them.

Students are in production for their group cut paper animation. They should have the bulk of their shots done by the end of the day next Friday - They should be putting all the work together in frames 5 or smart phone software on Tuesday of the following week. We will share have a film screening on Wednesday.

Period 1

Today we had the world premier of the last Walden video, "The Legend of Camp Walden".

I also re explained the visual sequence narrative work we are doing by using Jonathan's diagram and I introduced cue cards so each group can take each shot in their mind map and put it on a card. Students who were finished took the iPads and started to create "visual storyboard" shots or clips to do a very rough set of visuals that represent how each shot will look in the final shoot.

Next day - more planning and iPad work. I will bring in some more props.

Period 3
Animation - student short films were shown - final submission due on Friday in pogoplug

Work on group/solo long cut paper animation has begun - storyboard should be done by beginning of class tomorrow. Group signup sheet incompete - check wish list items.

Student should be in production until Monday and be editing until the end of next week.

Remember to mark reviews and animations submitted to day

Period 4
Students did not really do any colour temp work - this will be put on hold until after card assignment.
Working on Card Assignment - must hand in storyboard, script, and film by end of next week at the very latest. Would be great if they could be in by Monday.  Video length 60 or 90 secs (IN POGOPLUG)

Period 1 - introduced the sequence assignments - groups assigned and stories started

Period 2 - students did composition/temperature quiz and started colour temp assignment. Rough cuts card files due on Monday 29. 

Got the news that we will not be getting our new room for a few days more. 

I am planning to outfit the room with a dance floor, yoga mats and drama boxes instead of the regular classroom furniture - exciting!
